Types of Email Accounts
There are two main types of email service providers to choose from: email clients and webmail. When you use your provider to access your email from a different device or location online, you can use one of three major email protocols to do so: POP3, IMAP, and Exchange.
Webmail are web-based email accounts. These are usually free email accounts that are operated from a website. Examples include Hotmail, GMail and Yahoo Mail.
Webmail allows the users to access their emails as long as they have access to an Internet connection and a web browser. This also means that the user cannot read an old email or draft a new email offline.
POP3, which is an abbreviation for Post Office Protocol 3, is the third version of a widespread method of receiving email. Much like the physical version of a post office clerk, POP3 receives and holds email for an individual until they pick it up.
And, much as the post office does not make copies of the mail it receives, in previous versions of POP3, when an individual downloaded email from the server into their email program, there were no more copies of the email on the server; POP automatically deleted them.
POP3 makes it easy for anyone to check their email from any computer in the world, provided they have configured their email program properly to work with the protocol.
If you’ve ever set up an email account before, you’ve probably been asked which email protocol you would like to use: POP or IMAP. To the uninitiated, this question can be positively mind-boggling. However, the selection that you make will have a major impact on your experience of sending, receiving and otherwise using email messages.
While POP, or Post Office Protocol, used to be the most popular type of email protocol, IMAP – or Internet Message Access Protocol – is the go-to choice of most people these days. Learn more about what IMAP is, how it works, how it compares to POP and its main advantages below.

A Gmail account is a email provider company free Google account with an email address that ends in @gmail.com. Gmail accounts arrived on the scene back in 2004, and they were such a hot commodity that people needed to receive an invitation in order to acquire an account. At the time, the 1 GB of storage space and the clever threading of conversations seemed so modern in contrast to Yahoo or Hotmail accounts. As the amount of free storage space grew, so did the applications people associated with a Gmail account. People who use Gmail can also access Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Calendar. The account allows access to other Google applications like Photos, Maps, and YouTube.
Many Gmail users like the applications and the anytime/anywhere access so much that they arrange to have their work email forwarded to Gmail; this is more common in smaller organizations where email security is more relaxed. The account settings of Gmail allow you to display a business email address as the “reply from” address. A Gmail account is managed only by the individual who owns the account, not an organization’s IT administrator.

AOL Mail users simply go to mail.aol.com, enter their login information and start sending e-mails.
You can still download AOL’s all-in-one Internet software and use the built-in e-mail program (the latest is called AOL Desktop and it’s free). For the purposes of this article, we’re going to focus on the Web mail version of AOL Mail.
